The City of Groupers
The City of Groupers (also nicknamed Merouville from the French word for groupers) is one of the most famous shoals around Lavezzi Island. In this beautiful stretch of sea that separates Sardinia from Corsica, it is possible to find a wide variety of fish and a large number of Brown Groups, from which this place takes its name.
For many years, every type of fishing has been banned in this area, which is part of the International Marine Park of the Strait of Bonifacio. This protection has allowed these magnificent specimens to thrive. Today, there is a huge number of groupers, many of considerable size. These fish have become accustomed to the presence of humans; instead of being scared, they are intrigued by us. Often, they approach and follow divers during their dives. The level of interaction with these animals is stunning.
This location is about a mile east of Lavezzi Island, with a depth ranging from 16 to 35 meters. Considering the depth and the distance from the shore, this type of dive is recommended mainly for certified divers and experienced free divers. However, for those who prefer snorkeling, the spectacle is still assured. It always is an astonishing and unforgettable experience.
